Tube Preamp emulates the distortion characteristics of an analog tube amplifier while letting the user customize the simulated tube circuit. 

Tube Preamp stands out as one of the most “tweakable” saturation plugins on the market. You can manually adjust and fine-tune almost every virtual component of the modeled tube circuit.

The user can quite easily edit the values of the simulated capacitors, resistors, and other components. Each component is controlled by a tiny knob that directly adjusts its value.

Burier Saturation

 Burier is a saturation/filter combo.

Burier has a large central “BURY” knob controlling the amount of saturation applied. Below that is a mix dial to blend the wet/dry signal, an output dial, and a link switch that links the output gain to the BURY level. When linked, the output dial will adjust automatically to compensate for any level adjustments you make. The filter section features IIR (Infinite Impulse Responses) low cut and high cut filters.

Low Wave Studios Track24

Track24 focuses on tape saturation without the more mechanical artifacts like wow/flutter.

Technically, that should mean you get the warmth without any of the other noise. Track24 has a tone section offering four different filter presets inspired by two different tape machines.

Type I is a preset created from a Swiss-made tape machine running at 30ips. The second preset, Type II is based on a Japanese tape machine running at 30ips. The same Japanese machine was used to create Type III, this time running at 15ips. There is a Neutral preset, which is a completely flat response.

Texture slider:  When you apply saturation, you are adding harmonics that warm or thicken the original tone. There are even and odd harmonics, and some analog gear will add more evens than odd or vice versa. In simple terms, even harmonics can feel like adding warmth, support, and stability, much like playing octaves on a keyboard. Odd harmonics can be a bit brighter and grittier. Being able to control that texture with a simple slider is a nice touch.

You also get a pair of high and low-pass filters that are pre-saturation, which means they are shaping the incoming signal. There is a 4X oversample button to help avoid aliasing, although it may introduce slight latency issues. Lastly, there is a dry/wet mix control to blend the clean and saturated signals.

PreFET

PreFET, a saturation plugin that uses machine learning to emulate a 70s tabletop cassette recorder’s transistor preamp.

PreFET uses an artificial neural network algorithm that has simulates the transistor preamp found in an audio cassette recorder from the 1970s. The plugin takes advantage of the same technology that was used for the PreTube, a premium tape saturation plugin from the same developer. Unlike the PreTube plugin, which emulates three different preamp models, PreFET focuses on a single transistor preamp model.

GMH Audio Wave Destroyer,

Wave Destroyer is a free distortion effect programmed by GMH Audio, the developer behind the free Buzz Cut soft clipper plugin, which we covered back in 2018. Whereas Buzz Cut focused on a single method of audio distortion, the new Wave Destroyer effect delivers a much more extensive arsenal of distortion types. The plugin also includes a set of frequency shaping features that make it a much more powerful sound design tool.
The plugin features three distortion modes: Saturate, Distort, and Destroy. Each mode can be fine-tuned using the Drive control, as well as the Asymmetry and Bias adjustments. Wave Destroyer also includes two EQ stages (pre-distortion and post-distortion), input and output gain adjustments, oversampling, a DC filter, a mix control, and a bypass switch. The two equalizer sections feature five adjustable frequency bands. It’s possible to link the two EQs for more effortless operation.

Tape Cassette 2 is an audio plugin that emulates the warmth, noise and character of old tape cassettes. Following up from our well received Tape Cassette 1, we've updated the plugin with a sleek interface and more changes under the hood too.

MaxSynths

MaxSynths have announced that their complete VST plugin line-up is now re-released as freeware. All interested users can download the plugins completely free of charge from the official MaxSynths website.
The developer has released quite a few interesting freebies in the past (PAL-9000 and Sturiophonia are a couple of most recent examples), along with ten commercial VST plugins for Windows. Sadly, it seems that MaxSynths won’t be releasing any new software in the future and won’t be able to provide support for the current plugins either, so they’ve decided to make all of their products free to download and use. Shattered Glass Audio has released SGA1566, a free plug-in for Mac OS X and Windows in AU and VST plug-in formats.

SGA1566 is designed to deliver the sonic beauty of a two stage, all tube, preamp using circuit simulation technology. SGA1566 is loosely based on a single channel vintage tube preamplifier. To achieve the most authentic analog sound, the whole circuit is simulated in real time using the high performance circuit simulator. This level of sound fidelity comes at a price of high CPU utilization. For cases where such a CPU hit is prohibitive, SGA have added a model that is significantly less CPU intensive but only slightly less accurate than the circuit simulation.

Use SGA1566 preamp to add warmth to a track, as a saturation compressor, or to add "dirt" with tube overdrive.
