Chorus GAS

Chorus GAS consists of four independent modules of delay lines, which are tuned to the required notes from the full MIDI range (from C0 to G10), which allows you to get quite interesting combined effects - chorus, flanger, phaser, vibrato, etc., within one plug-in. Thanks to the tuning of the delay lines to the key, quite interesting types of tonal choruses and flangers are realized, imitating interval, chord, pentatonic and other sound combinations that cannot be realized through other effects. Another distinctive feature of this effect is the presence of an adjustable high-pass filter in the feedback loop, which gives a peculiar flavor to the sound, reminiscent of flight.

JBR Chorus

JBR Chorus, a freeware 8-voice modulation effect.
JBR Chorus has the word chorus in its title, but the plugin’s advanced feature set allows for plenty more modulation effects than just plain old chorusing. This is reflected in the included factory presets as well, which cover various gating, tremolo, and even some fully glitched out patches. It would be nice to see a few more classic chorus patches added to the factory preset bank.

The plugin features eight independent voices, each with individual in/out gain, delay (range between 0 and 100 ms), depth, in/out pan, and pan law controls. The voices can also be soloed and muted. The real fun begins in the modulation section, though. It offers up to 50 modulators with up to 50 modulation targets for each one. At the moment, it is only possible to use LFOs and XY pads as modulation sources, although the developer has stated that future versions of JBR Chorus should also include ADSR envelopes and envelope followers.

OSL Chorus

OSL Chorus, a freeware VST/AU plugin which emulates the chorus module found in the Roland Juno 60 hardware synthesizer.

OSL Chorus was designed to sound as close as possible to the original Juno 60 chorus out of the box. However, in contrast to the original unit which offered only two presets, Oblivion Sound Lab’s freeware emulation provides a range of parameters for customizing its sound. This also makes OSL Chorus an interesting, slightly more advanced alternative to Togu Audio Line’s excellent (and also free) TAL-Chorus-LX effect.

The plugin’s control scheme isn’t super-complex or anything like that, but it provides enough versatility to cover a wide range of chorusing flavors. It features LFO rate, modulation depth, and offset parameters, along with a filter cutoff control and dry/wet signal volume adjustments. The LFO controls can take OSL Chorus anywhere from a very subtle chorus effect to a rather aggressive modulation effect, whereas the filter cutoff dial works well for shaping the tone of the effect. This makes OSL Chorus a reasonably flexible chorus unit, much more so than its hardware counterpart. It’s also worth mentioning the the plugin can process both stereo and mono audio sources, meaning that it can be used for adding width to your mono recordings.

The interface looks nice and clean, with a color scheme which only ever so slightly resembles the synthesizer that inspired it. I’d prefer to see those classic Juno blue and yellow highlights, simply for the nostalgia effect. There’s nothing technically wrong with the GUI, though, and it’s a joy to use. The CPU usage (or lack thereof, to be precise) is another good reason to add OSL Chorus to your plugin arsenal.

Acon Digital Multiply

Acon Digital Multiply is a free and versatile chorus effect with a unique twist. Each simulated voice is processed with a phase randomizing filter so that unpleasant comb filter effects are avoided. The effect can be used to simulate the effect of several performers playing the same tones simultaneously, to widen the spatial image or to create special effects for sound design. Multiply can simulate up to 6 additional voices and both the pitch and the loudness of the voices can be modulated. There is also an integrated equalizer consisting of low cut, low shelf, high shelf and high cut filters that can be applied to the effect signal. An integrated pre-delay section makes it possible to create modulated and diffuse echo effects.

HY-ChoFla

HY-ChoFla. This is a Chorus and Flanger combo free plugin and with chorus and flanging being such similar effects it is quite understandable that HY-plugins decided to release these in one package. Both modes of the plugins come with an HP/LP filter an LFO for modulation and a dry wet section on the output to either make the effect more pronounced or more subtle to taste.

Svep

Klevgränd Produktion
Svep kind of blurs the lines between a chorus effect, a phaser and a flanger. It can do all three of these effect types, as well as some more extreme (or really subtle) pitch modulation effects. The user interface is quite possibly the best part of Svep. It looks super stripped-down and simple, yet at the same time it doesn’t make you feel like you would need access to any additional control parameters. Using such a practical and well designed minimalist user interface is quite refreshing if you’re used to working with complex effects or virtual instruments.
