PhatNoise Delay

PhatNoise Delay is a pretty straightforward delay effect with adjustable delay time, feedback, and dry/wet parameters. The product page states that the plugin emulates “the rich and thick sound of tape echo units from the 70s”, but I have to admit that I wasn’t getting any of that vibe while testing PhatNoise Delay. It sounds like a pure digital delay to me without any coloration of the delayed signal whatsoever.

DMGaudio TrackControl

TrackControl is an all-in-one channel strip plugin featuring trim and gain controls, channel swapping and MS/LR conversion, phase inversion (per channel), stereo width, pan and balance controls, channel delay (both backward and forward) and a high-pass filter. The output control (located in the menu bar) allows the user to monitor the Mid/Side and Left/Right components of the processed audio signal individually. A patch manager is also included, along with a bypass switch and input/output gain monitoring. It’s also worth pointing out that the plugin will only display a limited amount of controls when loaded on a mono channel, to avoid any confusion (stereo balance, pan, and width controls are left out in this case).

Etherealwinds Harp II

Etherealwinds Harp II is a multi-format sound library of a 34-string lever harp, recorded by Versilian Studios and Etherealwinds during an eight-hour studio session. It is described by its creators as “possibly the most complete lever harp library in existence”. Since it is a successor to a popular freely downloadable instrument, Versilian Studios decided to release a feature-limited “Community Edition” of the library which can be downloaded completely free of charge. User registration is not required, as the download links can be accessed directly on the product page linked below.

The free CE version of Etherealwinds Harp II is based on 232 audio samples (16-bit WAV format) in total, with two round-robins and two velocity layers per sampled note. An additional set of 23 vocal phrases and sound effects from the full version of the library is included as a bonus.

Fathom Mono Modular Synthesizer

Seaweed Audio has announced the release of Fathom Mono, the freeware monophonic version of the Fathom Pro ($35) modular wavetable synthesizer in VST plugin format for Windows-based digital audio workstations.

Fathom Mono is identical to the full Fathom Pro version feature-wise, except for its limited polyphony and the lack of ability to save edited waveforms. Everything else, entire synthesis engine included, is exactly the same as in the full product.

At its core, Fathom is a fully modular virtual synthesizer which allows the user to connect any two components together. The patching possibilities are only limited by the synth’s twenty available signal flow slots and, of course, the processing power of your computer. To help with monitoring the performance while creating a patch, Fathom shows a real-time CPU load readout in the upper-right corner of the GUI. The components are shown in a large panel in the middle of the interface with a handy real-time waveform display in the background. The patching of virtual cables is quite elegant, with a simple drag and drop workflow which doesn’t result in confusion and unnecessary clutter. The visual representation of the signal flow is also pulled off quite well, with easily identifiable modules and connections.

A modular synth ain’t no fun if you don’t have any interesting components to patch together, though. Thankfully, there’s tons of cool stuff to play around with in Fathom, from its five powerful oscillators to 30 different filter models, unlimited modulation sources, and custom waveform import (in WAV format). The oscillator types on offer are alias-free analog and additive, impulse and frequency pulse oscillators, and most importantly, the wavetable and wave draw oscillators which open almost limitless sound design possibilities. The filters are no less impressive, covering a range of common variants, along with the Butterworth filter and various analog-modeled filter types.

Cloud Seed

Cloud Seed is an algorithmic reverb plugin built in C# and C++ for emulating huge, endless spaces and modulated echoes. The algorithms are based on the same principles as manu classic studio reverb units from the 1980's, but Cloud Seed does not attempt to model any specific device, or even to be a general-purpose reverb plugin at all. It is best employed as a special effect, for creating thick, lush pads out of simple input sounds.
