Use Pre Gain to tame the signal before it hits the ceiling, or to boost right into it.
Set a ceiling value to cut off anything that would peak above it. The more the little LED to the right of the ceiling knob flickers, the more clipping is happening.
AGC engages automatic make-up gain calculation. This doesn't just boost everything up to the max, it tries to maintain a fairly natural volume level similar to the un-clipped source.
Use Post Gain to adjust the volume after the clipping stage and auto make-up gain. Be careful how far you boost this...
You'll never know what the Cut button does, because you're not a wimp. Right?

HY-ChoFla

HY-ChoFla. This is a Chorus and Flanger combo free plugin and with chorus and flanging being such similar effects it is quite understandable that HY-plugins decided to release these in one package. Both modes of the plugins come with an HP/LP filter an LFO for modulation and a dry wet section on the output to either make the effect more pronounced or more subtle to taste.

I just made life much easier for you by taking the 167 available free banks I know about, cleaning them up, and then putting them in a single ZIP file you can download. Click here to get it.
So - after you download the ZIP file, unpack it to a folder of your choice. Just make sure it's on your computer's internal hard drive. Then open Synth1 and click the "Opt"-button, then the "Browse"-button on the right side, and select the folder you just unpacked the ZIP-file to.

Now when you want to use the banks, click the fields next to the "Opt"-button, which will open this dialogue:

MaxSynths

MaxSynths have announced that their complete VST plugin line-up is now re-released as freeware. All interested users can download the plugins completely free of charge from the official MaxSynths website.
The developer has released quite a few interesting freebies in the past (PAL-9000 and Sturiophonia are a couple of most recent examples), along with ten commercial VST plugins for Windows. Sadly, it seems that MaxSynths won’t be releasing any new software in the future and won’t be able to provide support for the current plugins either, so they’ve decided to make all of their products free to download and use. Here is the complete list of previously commercial MaxSynths instruments and effects that are now freeware:

Acustica Audio Red EQ

The equalizer features three fixed bands with up to 6 dB boost/cut per band. The low and high bands act as shelving EQs, while the mid band has a standard bell response. The interface also features input and output gain controls, along with a power button which can bypass the EQ section.
The input meter located on the right side of the interface is useful for preventing unwanted distortion of the audio signal on the input. If the red warning lamp lights up, you should reduce the input gain in order to prevent clipping of the signal.
The Acqua technology approach to equalizers. If works great for enhancing the higher frequency ranges of audio signals, adding just the right amount of sparkle and air on top.

Acustica-Audio Ochre EQ

Ochre Free is the first release in Acustica-Audio’s new series of plugins which aren’t based on any specific hardware device (please correct me in the comments section if I’m wrong about this, though). The download pack is around 100 MB in size so there’s definitely some Acustica-Audio dynamic hardware IR capturing going on here. The performance is flawless and the CPU hit is below 8% at all times, even with all three bands and the preamp stage active.
The sound is what you’d expect from an Acustica-Audio plugin, warm and organic. Wheat really makes Ochre Free stand out though is the high frequency band, which sounds incredibly well even when pushed to its limits. It’s the perfect tool for adding that final bit of air and sparkle to your finished mixes. With a nice broad Q setting and 3-6 dB of gain added around 22 kHz, you’ll probably get a nicely enhanced top end.
